Proportion

The difference between major and minor surgery, the quip suggests: "major surgery is any surgery done on me."

This tweet from The Atlantic suggests that measure can be overdone. Yet, Hurricane Irene damage and loss of life are severe. Yes, coverage of it did trump serious news from elsehwere.

On the other hand, as Hurricane Katrina reached U.S. Gulf Shores, the outpouring of sympathy from Sri Lankans to a U.S. tourist, visiting their island-nation ravaged by a tsunami not a full year previous, was profuse, genuine and unexpected.

It is difficult to know how others truly see us. All the more reason to be aware of the images the U.S. and U.S. citizens project to the world.
