The second Friday following Pentecost Sunday celebrates the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Jesuit St. Claude La Colombiere, John Paul II remembered, was charged “to spread and preach the mystery of his Sacred Heart.” Since then the Society of Jesus promotes this devotion, with each Jesuit letting it shape his work and life. Jesuit theologian Karl Rahner considered this charge a second founding moment of the Society.
Reverend Dermot Power considers the Sacred Heart devotion in his post at ThinkingFaith, and “encourages us to be sensitive to the truth about God’s love for us that this feast can help to illuminate.”
