Two hundred years ago on 7 August Pope Pius VII restored the Society of Jesus. It had been suppressed by papal pronouncement in 1773. Several factors in European countries led to its suppression. The factors ranged widely, including: philosophy of government; monetary reform; dress; and, of course, power. Jesuit Thomas M. McCoog briefly details them and others in four countries. He does so in his “Jesuit Restoration - Part One: The Jesuits in Europe before 1769.”
